Once the surface cracks, water gets into the foam and the failure accelerates from cosmetic to structural. A buggy that lives outdoors will show this within a few seasons regardless of how gently it is used. That is why protection is about sun far more than it is about abrasion, which is the opposite of how most people think about seat covers.
The Trapped Moisture Problem
The mistake that undoes good intentions is fitting a cover over wet seats and leaving it. A cover over damp upholstery creates a humid, dark, still environment, which is close to ideal for mildew, and the damage under the cover can end up worse than leaving the seats exposed. The habit that prevents it is simple: let seats dry before covering, and lift or vent the cover after wet use rather than sealing it down immediately. This applies equally to full weather enclosures on the whole buggy.
Choosing Material That Lasts
Marine-grade vinyl is the standard worth specifying, and the difference is not marketing. It is formulated with UV inhibitors and mildew resistance because it is designed to live outdoors on boats, which is a harsher environment than a golf course. Ordinary automotive or craft vinyl yellows, stiffens and cracks under Australian sun within a season or two, at which point it is doing nothing useful. Check stitching too, since thread degrades under UV faster than the panel material and a cover usually fails at the seams first.
Covers Versus Reupholstering
The economics run one way. A seat cover costs a fraction of reupholstering, and reupholstering costs a fraction of replacing the buggy over damage that started as a cracked seat surface. If your seats are still sound, covering them is straightforwardly the cheapest decision you can make. If they have already split and the foam is wet, a cover will hide the problem rather than solve it, and reupholstering or replacing the seat assembly is the honest answer.
